Aussie Gambling Adverts On The Rise

26 percent YTD increase reported

Reporting on a surge in gambling advertising in Australia so far this year, the local publication AdNews quoted figures from Standard Media Index showing that in the year to end July, gambling advertisement investment has soared 26 percent to A$140 million… despite tougher government restrictions introduced this year.

The SMI numbers show that the surge in advertising has impacted all major channels , led by 121 percent growth in newspaper advertising, 84 percent in cinema, and 60 percent in outdoor. Television, which has been a particularly restricted medium, recorded 15 percent growth.

Restrictions imposed by the government decree when gambling adverts can be screened online and on television, but Aussies’ love for a flutter, allied to the number of major sporting events and the fierce competition among operators, keep the field buoyant.

Gambling is not the only Australian industry supporting the advertising industry; the largest investments in percentage growth terms this year have been made by utility companies, with advertising increasing by 51.4 percent to $40.7 million in the year to July.

Banks are also big advertisers, and percentage growth is rising, reaching 31 percent by end July to A$174 million.
